Commercial development of magnetic cooling
A vital tool for developing an optimised magnetic cooling system for commercial application is a model of the active magnetic regenerator (AMR). The commercial objectives in terms of cost, weight, volume and operating parameters drive the goals of the modelling activity.
Much work has been undertaken on the modelling of AMRs but these models have tended to focus on ensuring conservation of energy, or first law validation. By extending the analysis to include the computation of entropy generation, the model can be validated not only against the first law of thermodynamics but also against the second law. This provides an important additional check on the internal consistency of a model.
Such a model can identify the sources of entropy (irreversible losses) microscopically (at all points in space and time within a cooling cycle), enabling a mapping from the actual efficiency to the equivalent Carnot efficient system.
Such models are key to system optimisation needed for achieving the commercial goals of magnetic cooling.
